A Quiet Garden on 700 m², Shmidtovo
Busy, sociable people wanted the opposite at home: a quiet garden to come back to, with a lawn under the old pines and a brick barbecue pavilion. They built it themselves from our drawings, and chose the hydrangeas and clematis on their own.
The place and the brief
The plot is 700 m² with heavy clay and a level change against the neighbours, and mature pines worth keeping.
The owners wanted to build the garden themselves. So the work took the form of a project and consultations: we drew, they built, and we stayed available for the questions that come up on the ground.
What we decided
The first step was drainage and soil improvement; nothing else would have held on that clay. Then a simple frame: a lawn under the pines, paths from the porch and the terrace, a brick barbecue pavilion, a small kitchen garden along the fence, and shrubs and perennials around the edges.
Some of the best parts were not in the drawings. The owner chose hydrangeas and named clematis for the borders, and they became the garden’s accents. That is how the format is meant to work: the project sets the structure, the people who live there fill it in.
