Among the Birches, Southern Urals
Morning coffee on the veranda, the sauna in the evening, friends around a fire — on a plot of mature birches the owners wanted to keep as a wood. The first stage is built: the paths from the terrace already give the garden its shape.
The place and the brief
The owners wanted a place to step out into at any hour, not a plot to work on every weekend.
The ground was rough — virgin soil, stumps of old scrub, the remains of a foundation, clay, a sheet-metal fence. Its one great asset was the mature birches, and the brief was to keep them as a wood rather than flatten the plot into a standard lawn.
What we decided
Every function was fitted between the existing trees: a timber terrace off the house, the sauna with its own sitting area, a fire bowl, a compact kitchen garden with a greenhouse, a pool. The parking is screened from the private garden by a mass of ornamental grasses.
The first stage is done: services and hidden utilities, including a winter water line to the sauna; the levels regraded; monolithic concrete paths and steps cast in place from the terrace. Their curves already set the frame of the garden. Next come the grasses, the decks and the evening lighting.
