A New House in an Old Garden, Ufa
The owners built a new house and wanted a place to come back to from the city: a gazebo with a barbecue at the heart of the garden, a sauna and a tidy kitchen garden, and privacy from neighbours who live close by.
The place and the brief
A new, modern house had gone up, and the old garden no longer belonged to it. The owners asked for the plot to be rethought from the ground up: contemporary, roomy and comfortable.
The plot is an awkward shape, and the neighbours are close.
What we decided
The centre of the garden is a new gazebo with a barbecue, set among conifers and a deep mixed border that hides the fence. A sauna and a tidy kitchen garden take one corner of the plot; a hedge and a pair of arches separate the kitchen garden from the sitting area, so each reads as its own room.
With the neighbours this close, privacy has to come from height: pergolas hung with wild grapevine, and narrow-crowned trees planted where the sightlines need closing.
The old planting was cleared where it stood in the way of the new layout.
