Evenings in a Garden of Scents, Akmanai
Evenings in the gazebo, roses along the walks, and the scent of lavender and thyme coming in through the open windows. For ten years the garden has grown with the family, one bed at a time, across 3,000 m² on a gentle slope.
The place and the brief
The owner wanted a garden that smelled of Provence: roses, lavender, thyme, mint and lemon balm around the house, and a place to sit in it in the evening. The plot slopes gently down from the house, with a long stone wall along the edge.
There was no wish for a rigid master plan. The garden was to be added to as the family lived in it, one composition at a time.
What we decided
We worked in steps, starting from the terrace by the house and the stairs that lead down into the garden. Each new bed began with plants found at the nursery that season and was tied to the paths, the gazebo and the views from the windows.
Roses and aromatic herbs became the heart of the garden: perovskia, lavender, thyme, mint and lemon balm along the walks, so the scent reaches the gazebo and comes into the house through open windows. Pines, junipers and spireas hold the structure in winter.
Ten years on, regular shaping and pruning keep the mature plants in balance.
