Nine Years of a Garden, Akmanai
Lawns to walk on, a hanging chair by the stone wall, the pavilion by the terrace — and a garden that keeps its shape all year, its red dogwood stems standing against the snow. Nine years on, it looks the way it was drawn.
The place and the brief
The owners wanted a garden that would get better with time rather than need replacing: clear lines around the house, and planting that reads as well under snow as in June.
What we decided
The structure comes from hedges. A long hedge of white dogwood runs beside the main path; in summer it is a green wall, in winter its red stems stand against the snow. Clipped box and cotoneaster frame the lawns, and standard maples give the walks their rhythm and shade.
Around the terrace and the pavilion the planting is looser: pines and spruces on mulch, spireas, barberries and lilac by the paths, a hanging chair by the stone wall.
Since planting, the garden has had its seasonal treatments, shaping, and replacements for what did not take. Nine years on, it looks like the drawing intended.
